Saturday mornings in Bangkok are always exciting for the River Asia. Our team simply loves seeing the kids in the labour camps having fun and engaging in our children’s program.
Labour Camps can be found all over Bangkok city. They are filled with workers and their families from Myanmar, who are contracted to work on building sites throughout the city. The children’s lives can be so transient as their families move from job site to job site, that to have a consistent team turn up just for them is something rare and special!
These kids love dancing, they love having fun and they love making things with their hands, like smiley face biscuits, toilet roll animals and polystyrene piggies! It’s great to see them grow in confidence and watch as the older ones help the younger ones in activities. Every week their English is improving and they are now able to have small conversations with the staff in English.
THIS WEEK at Kids Club was extra exciting though and a first for our work in Bangkok. We had four young adults, who attended our English Hangout the previous night, come to assist our team. To see the young people of this city take ownership and have a desire to work alongside The River Asia in community development is breaking new ground.
This Labour Camp Kids Club impacts not only children and their families, but the young people of this city who have never before engaged with struggling communities.
